Reading Readiness
How can you tell if a child is ready to go from listening to stories to reading stories?
Below is a list of behaviours, skills, and interests which indicate that a child is ready for reading.
If a child is under 4 1/2 years and is already reading or strongly showing the characteristics listed below he/she may have a special gift in reading. Click here for an article about this.
Formal reading instruction begins usually when a child starts primary school. Possibly your main interest in looking at this checklist is to use it to assess if a child turning age 5 is ready for learning to read at school.
The list can be useful also as a source of ideas for parents and early childhood teachers who are supporting a young child to develop pre-reading skills.
