What is 'Safe from the Start'?
Safe from the Start was developed by The Salvation Army in Tasmania initially for domestic violence refuges, and has expanded into a national project relevant to child protection agencies, family counselling services, child care centres, technical training colleges, mental health and drug and alcohol programmes.
It has received funding from the Commonwealth Office for Women, Tasmanian Early Years Foundation and The Salvation Army; and won a Child Protection Award.
Safe from the Start is a research based project, developed in partnership with two universities in Australia with researchers: Dr Erica Bell - University of Tasmania – Department of Rural Health and Dr Angela Spinney - Swinburne University – Victoria, Australia.
The objective of the project was therefore, to identify and form a register of appropriate intervention activities which children’s workers in frontline services and parents living in refuges could use for working with children, aged up to six, who had been exposed to domestic and family violence. The project also had a secondary aim to train service workers to work with the resources that were researched and developed throughout the duration of the project.
