Overloading Children with Education Activities
By Sarah Farquhar
With all the focus on early childhood education and the importance of children getting a head start before school parents are trying to do more to ensure their child gets lots of preschool activities. But then parents worry about the consequences of creating a pressured and busy childhood instead of a fun and memorable one.
Questions parents ask include:
- Could a childcare facility have too much in the way of activities for preschoolers, i.e. overloading them with activities/exercises?
- Are we putting more emphasis on preschoolers to learn than for them to be kids?
- Should we be taking our child to extra language classes, dancing classes, music classes, swimming etc over and above the standard activities offered by early childhood education services?
A big problem for many children today is that spare time has become scarce. Parents are busy and therefore children are kept occupied and busy too, often in the care of someone else.
