For music and movement playing anything on your IPod from chart music through to techno is something you may do spontaneously with children. For more formal sessions, you may, for example, choose classical music to teach an appreciation of the great masters such as Beethoven. Most popular in early childhood programmes are kids DVD's such as "Love to Sing" and "kindyRock".
If you are looking for a change and to try something quite different, why not try rapping!
Rapping is performed to a beat and there may or may not be an accompaniment. It is closely associated with hip hop and reggae. Rhythm and rhyme and quick speech are key ingredients of a rap.
To show you how, here's a video of teacher Joshua Webb demonstrating the technique at Kiwicare's Preschool in Avondale, Auckland. He is performing number and alphabet raps. Thank you to Joshua and the Kiwicare team for supplying this video.
Of course as children become familiar with rapping they may develop their own raps and co-direct or direct the group themselves.
