Turning 5. An important early childhood event in NZ marking the end of the early childhood years and the start of schoolingIn a nutshell "early childhood" means the years between birth and the time that a child starts primary school.  Read more ...

In NZ children start school usually on their 5th birthday. Though you'll find in human development research and theory that the early childhood years describes the period from birth to 8 years of age.

In different countries different terms are used to classify an array of services for young children - early years services, early childhood education services, pre-primary, etc.   In NZ the terms used to classify services for children before they start school are 'early childhood education' or 'early childhood care and education'.
