In NZ children start school usually on their 5th birthday. Though you'll find in human development research and theory that the early childhood years describes the period from birth to 8 years of age.
In different countries different terms are used to classify an array of services for young children - early years services, early childhood education services, pre-primary, etc. In NZ the terms used to classify services for children before they start school are 'early childhood education' or 'early childhood care and education'.
