An ECE service need only have a small number of written policies in order to be licensed. For example instead of having a written nappy changing policy its legally acceptable to have a card or poster displayed on the wall near the nappy changing area that states the procedure staff will follow for the changing and disposal of nappies. Written policies, when developed have added advantages over procedure statements, as they show the ECE service has thought more in-depth about the why, where, when, how, and buts. Philosophy and beliefs underpin policies. Policies can also provide a basis for self-review as well as pointing to any areas where future expenditure and planning might be needed. Policies have an added advantage over procedure statements in that policy development and review necessitates consultation with families, staff, and other stakeholders.
