Being a Man Working in Early Childhood Education is No Issue for a Child Advocate
Gender no issue in early childhood education
Suva, Fiji, August 2012 - ''Young children are precious and I have to handle them with great duty of care, as they are the pillars of tomorrow's world as leaders and citizens.''
These were the words of Mohenesh Singh a child advocate, former candidate of Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation and current Chairman of APTC Alumni Association Fiji west.
"As being a man and working in early childhood field is something unique for me as well as challenging," said Singh
Singh said that ECE is traditionally seen as a female dominated profession in Fiji but as a child worker he loves this task.
He believes that nurturing a child to its full potential takes a father, a mother and the whole community.
"Children are the pure form of human kind therefore it is the responsibility of human race to care, nurture and develop, with full support to a child, so they can reach their full potential in life. Male or female, we all need to share the responsibility of a child's care."
Singh said that he chose this profession because he strongly believes that in the education sector, early childhood education is the most important part of human schooling life which provides a unique opportunity in life of an individual - a period where changes can be made and the foundations laid for exploring the challenges of diversity and inclusion.
He added that the experiences, beliefs and attitudes that children encounter in this period will maintain a strong influence on their future acceptance and appreciation of diversity.
"It is important that young children develop self confidence, independence and positive self esteem to feel valued as unique individuals with specific skills and interest," he said.
Singh has been involved with young children's education for the past 8 years and enjoys his role as child advocate and ECE specialist. He has also done a project on early childhood recently under Vodafone ATH Fiji foundation where he visited 15 childcare centres and promoted ECE effectiveness and importance.
By choosing this field Singh has set an example and showed the nation that not all males are predators but can be good child advocates. Currently he is working on plans to do more charity work for needy children of Fiji.
