Overseas Trained Teachers Can Bring a Lot: But their Value is Not Always Recognised
Overseas Trained Teachers Can Bring a Lot: But their Value is Not Always Recognised

Cassandra Yeo trained and worked as an early childhood teacher in Singapore before coming to New Zealand in 2006. Her training consisted of a basic, intermediate and advanced course before starting a 2-year diploma programme. She also studied for an MSc in Community Service Management (Childcare) from the University of Wales. She has managed the early childhood centres at University of Canterbury. Yeo has also employed a number of foreign teachers; however these have mainly been as relievers as they have not been able to get registration in New Zealand. Many of them have had a negative experience of the New Zealand ECE system and have ultimately returned to their home countries or moved elsewhere.
