Children's Reading Comprehension - Research References and Ideas for Assessment
ChildForum member Miriam Anderson is looking into children's development of comprehension skills in reading and welcomes discussion and ideas on this.
Early childhood teachers frequently read to children individually, in small groups and in large groups. But how do we know what a young child understands from a story he/she is listening to?
Would it help for the teacher to ask questions during and after reading a story to increase children's understanding of the text being read – the story plot, its characters, and its message?
Have you come across any research or articles on this topic and any advice or ideas for teaching and assessing children's understanding that could help?
Please discuss and add your suggestions for research and ideas for strategies below.
