1.  Daddy Daycare Planned

We could be seeing dads working as educators and more kids benefiting from contact with men if Dean Severinsen has his way.  Many children in NZ spend little or no time in the company of a responsible male adult.  Few Dads get the opportunity to spend meaningful periods of time with their own children.  With government policy continuing to promote children spending longer hours in non-parental ECE the problem will worsen. But a planned new home-based ECE service called ‘Dino's Daddy Daycare’ is set to challenge this.

2.  NEWS:  Minister's Comments Unmask Actual Purpose of ECE Taskforce

The ECE Taskforce has caused fear and division in the early childhood sector. For the national government this is a good thing. It will be easier, and faster to reshape the sector into its vision.
Only days away from the close of submissions on the ECE Taskforce Report recommendations, the agenda behind appointing only representatives from teacher-led ECE centres and not from playcentre, kohanga reo, and home-based ECE is exposed.

A lot of hours in writing submissions, in lobbying, and in stress for people whose time was taken away from children could have been saved.

The Minister for Education has now given a commitment that despite what the ECE Taskforce has recommended, funding will not be cut to parent-led ECE services. This is a significant important promise going into the general election.

The promise gives a hint to teacher-led services, childcare centres especially and to a lesser extent kindergartens that they are not as safe as they might have thought they were from further funding cutbacks.

For Kohanga Reo the ECE Taskforce report was the 'straw that broke the camel's back'. The Kohanga Reo Trust has been tolerant for years of the manipulations of government and misunderstanding of its philosophy and purpose and methods.

3.  Giving Clarity to Conflicting Opinions about Using Controlled Crying to Train Children to Settle Themselves to Sleep

Having a baby who sleeps through the night is often talked about as a sign of success as a parent.  The common method for achieving this is the Controlled Crying technique.  Find out about the value of the Controlled Crying technique, when and how it should be used, problems with it, age appropriateness and use in childcare and early childhood services.  Suggestions for other ways of supporting good sleep and the wellbeing of the child and parents or caregivers are shared.

6.  Advice in Designing and Carrying Out Early Childhood Research

Designing and carrying out research in the area of early childhood education is one that is attempted by many, including experienced and beginning researchers, postgraduate and undergraduate students as well as by people working in a range of different early childhood services. For all, the principle of a robust design is key to successful data collection and analysis, but creating a strong design that is best suited to answering research questions and the research context can be challenging, particularly given ongoing tensions regarding the nature of appropriate educational research methods.

8.  Workshop: Critiquing Reviewed Literature to ‘wow' the Examiners

A half-day workshop at the Woodhill Park Research Retreat in Auckland is to be held on Saturday August 20th, 2011, 9.00 a.m. – 1.00 p.m.  Critiquing reviewed literature to make selected evidence and arguments thread seamlessly throughout the whole thesis demonstrates academic credibility to examiners. The course will show you what examiners typically look for and will help you to better understand how to build a convincing and scholastically rigorous literature review.  Further courses may be planned.  For details and to register contact Jens Hansen, Email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
