“Earthquake… Quick, Turtle drop” - Reflections and Discussion about what is Best Practice

earthquake 6Warwick Marshall

A big earthquake shakes while you’re in the kitchen at your house.  What do you do?

Of course you throw yourself to the floor and drop like a turtle. Yeah right!  Adults are known to wait to see if an earthquake is going to get stronger seemingly with a reliance on innate capacities for protection.  Using eyes to see hazards coming, arms or legs to parry the blows or leap out the way and sharpened senses as radar to guide to safety.

There is folly in this approach which is why the experts tell us on the Civil Defence website www.getthru .govt.nz to ‘drop, cover, hold’.

The turtle drop is fine for office workers and school students who can drop under their own desk, cover their neck with one hand and hold on to their desk with the other hand. But, it’s not quite that easy for children in ECE services who don’t spend most of their time sitting at desks.
