Non-contact time – your entitlements, how much teachers can need and why

© ChildForum

drums noiseAt centres and home-based services, teachers or educators have a wide range of responsibilities in their roles and finding time to do everything can especially be a challenge depending on things like the number of other teachers, how many hours your service operates and the demands/ needs of caring of children.

The amount of non-contact time teachers at different centres have varies significantly - from zero to four to five hours a week.

The quality of that time can vary also as does what duties teachers may be given during the non-contact time.

Home-based educators may only get non-contact time if and when all children are asleep at the same time – and how often does this happen when you have ages from infants to five or six year olds?

At centres, teachers can be given duties during non-contact time that they may question if these are duties they should be doing.

This article covers the above issues and invites you to add your experiences and questions.
