Food safety and safe eating

lunch timeIn an ECE service what you want to see is children seated when they are eating, and infants held upright on the adult's knee while they are drinking or being fed. 

A high level of supervision is critical for safety, so even for 4 year-olds an adult should be seated with children at each table/s. 

The food provided also needs to be safe for the child's age to go into their mouth, and be able to chew and swallow. It needs to be safely and hygienically prepared and served.

Children with special needs and food allergies will have additional requirements to ensure safety. 

Every adult in the setting should know about food safety, safe eating, and be able to identify signs of choking (different from gagging) and anaphylaxis symptoms, and know the correct first aid to give.
