Being better managers, leaders and governance committees

TLC for Managers and Leaders and Looking After Yourself

managers and owners need some tender loving care tooContents

3. The responsibilities that owners and governance committees must meet in regard to supporting the manager and leaders

1.  Introduction

There seems to be the perception and expectation that managers and leaders should be able to face difficulty in their role and “take it on the chin” so-to-speak.

All too often managers and leaders are subject to phrases such as, “Well that’s why you get paid the big bucks”, or, “A manager’s work is never done”, unfairly assuming that those in leadership roles are not entitled to support and understanding or even sometimes a life of their own.

Managers can sometimes be expected to “go the extra mile” and to work well outside of the scope of their role or their working hours.

To add to the pressure on managers and leaders, there is often a lack of training or support, particularly in smaller organisations where support may need to be obtained externally.

Managers can feel insufficiently qualified to do the role and find themselves “winging it”.  There can be a lot of pressure on the manager, whilst also learning on the go.

So, what are some strategies for looking after themselves?
