Ten new early childhood qualifications

© ChildForum

early childhood qualificationsTen new early childhood education qualifications have been approved by the NZ Qualifications Authority.

The approval of a whole new suite of Level 2 - 6 qualifications signals an intention to keep the bar low on the minimum level of qualification offered, at least for now.

These qualifications do not meet the Education Council's standard for a practising certificate. Graduates can find on gaining a position at a licensed early childhood programme that they are employed as unqualified teachers and paid at an unqualified rate.

The new qualifications are:

  • NZ Certificate in Early Childhood Learning and Care (Level 2) (40 credits)
  • NZ Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 3) (60 credits)
  • NZ Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 4) (60 credits)
  • NZ Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 5) (120 credits)
  • NZ Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 6) (120 credits)
  • He Taonga te Mokopuna (Level 2) (40 credits)
  • Te Mana o te Mokopuna (Level 3) (60 credits)
  • Te Puāwaitanga o te Mokopuna (Level 4) (60 credits)
  • Te Tipuranga o te Mokopuna (Level 5) (120 credits)
  • Te Rangatiratanga o te Mokopuna (Level 6) (120 credits)

Before they can offer one or more of the new qualification training providers need to obtain programme approval or accreditation from NZQA.

The last date for entry into programmes leading to the existing National qualifications is 31 December 2017, with a last date for assessment of the qualifications of 31 December 2019.

Having heard a colleague talk about how useful she had found their material I joined. ChildForum's replies to my queries are prompt, extremely informative & with a genuine personal touch. I am impressed by the commitment to research & courage in tackling the hard issues like the risks of poor quality care for under 2s
