Qualified Early Childhood Teachers Paid Less than the Centre Cleaners

There are calls in Australia for qualified early childhood teachers to be have wage parity with primary teachers. Early childhood teachers are currently paid an average of $A18.58 an hour - less than cleaners who receive an average of $A21.05 an hour.

Leading childcare bodies have called on the government to complete the nation's reform of the early childcare system by funding a package for professional wages. 

United Voice Children's Services union has asked for a minimum $A26 an hour for qualified early childhood teachers.

Independent Education Union general secretary John Quessy has argued that early childhood teachers with the same qualifications as primary teachers earn up to 20 per cent less.  (for more, visit
