Early Childhood Education has become increasingly more professional over the years with more and more teachers becoming qualified, but Government plans to cut funding has provoked fears that the sector will lose many of its qualified teachers.

The Government’s announcement sparked an initial backlash, particularly from the big ECE associations in the media, when ChildForum approached a number of centre managers and put the issue on several forums which attract parents and ECE teachers including the Trade Me Message Board and the Treasures Community, the response was mixed with many having positive things to say about non-qualified teachers. However it seems to be such a contentious issue that people who responded to ChildForum’s questions were unwilling to be named in this article, particularly those who work or have worked in ECE.

As a result ChildForum has decided not to name anyone in the following article.

For some early childhood education should be just that – education. It is a place where our young children go to be looked after but also to learn and as a result all those charged with their care should be qualified teachers.
