The new Health & Safety Act
Are you buying into the fear and thinking that maybe children shouldn't be allowed to climb trees or be taken on outings?
Are you feeling bamboozled by all the different advice for schools and businesses out there?
Are you thinking of rushing off and spending lots of money getting advice or attending courses even though your time is very precious?
On-line is an an easy to read summary and early childhood friendly perspective on the H&S Act. The ChildForum ECE management article also points to specific implications for centres, home-based and franchised ECE operations that providers/ manager / senior leaders need to know about. (And, information on free training and certification is included with the article if you think you or others in your organisation would benefit from it.)
Paid parental leave changes
There are many great aspects to the changes coming in on Friday this week.
But there are also some outstanding issues for educators, early childhood service providers and families!
Children's voice and children as participants in democratic society
At many schools and early childhood services around the country children got to have an opportunity to learn about voting and exercise their right to have a say on the future flag of NZ. This was a great example of education services supporting Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Congratulations to the 15 ECE services for making time to listen to children's voices and participating in our ECE Children's Referendum. The result - a preference for the new flag - was not expected but perhaps the result of the adult referendum may have been closer to the children's one if the flag vote hadn't become a politicised choice for adults.
When the rules don't work for children, educators or early childhood services
The National ECE Management Forum is scheduled for Friday 27th May in Wellington city. This is an important annual event that follows the release of the Government's Budget.
We are delighted ECE health and design specialist Mike Bedford will be joining us and giving a presentation on "When the rules don’t work” – Whether it’s the Criteria for Licensing, the Playground Safety Standards or the hygiene police".
The programme for the day is an absolutely fabulous one with topics that will really interest ECE service providers and professional leaders (and aspiring leaders)
Clocks go back 1 hour in NZ this weekend
While adults may enjoy getting an 'extra' hour, daylight saving can affect children in a number of ways and its important for adults to be aware so any changes in behaviour are understood
