Happy 2017 and welcome back everyone!

Instead of our usual newsletter this one is a checklist.

It is so you can see at a glance some things that may be useful for you to consider doing, exploring, preparing, or reading to help in being well set-up for the year.

Teaching and Caring for Children

Check your pay slip. Are you a teacher who is not at a kindergarten and working at an early childhood service that is claiming higher rates of funding for children on the basis of having qualified and certificated teachers? Pay needs to be at least at the minimum level rates as set out by the Ministry of Education.

Self-review and taking the stress out of self-review

Editor of the NZ International Research in ECE Journal, Dr Wendy Boyd, has issued a call for papers for the next journal issue. Papers reporting original research studies as well as shorter research notes on post-graduate research studies are invited.

If you are undertaking research this year in early childhood settings you are welcome to advertise your project or ask for participants by posting a notice in the Discussion Area

Managing and Running an Early Childhood Service(s)

De-clutter and throw-out / safely destroy old records.

Get a parent survey underway, learn parent views, and be open to feedback on how to continue to improve your early childhood service

The new Food Act - have you checked if your service needs to register under this?  All existing ECE services to whom the Food Act applies must apply for registration before or by 31 March 2017 at the latest!

Safety management - daily checklist template. Ensure members of your team are doing a thorough check for hazards and safety issues each day

Financial administration - check if the systems your service has in place to prevent theft of money, donations, etc., by staff, parent volunteers and others are sufficient

Parents should be informed of the service's complaints procedure - this is a legal requirement.  Make sure your new and current parents know what it is and there are forms available.

Police vetting is necessary for all new staff and workers, unless the new staff member is qualified teacher and holder of a practising certificate as police vetting will have already been completed as part of certification. Safety checking is necessary for all.
