Early Childhood Alert No. 24, 2017

How many presents can Santa fit into an empty sack?

Only one. After that it is not empty any more!

What do monkeys sing at Christmas?

Jungle bells, Jungle bells...

From the ChildForum team we wish you all the best for a relaxing holiday break and a very Happy Christmas!!!

Our office will remain open over the Christmas and New Year period to provide ongoing access for members and to support our early childhood sector.

It's a busy time of year, so we've tried to limit the number of links in this newsletter to need-to-know information of likely interest to the most people.

Big headlines this month about the drop in kiwi children's reading levels. The reading levels of school children in the highest socio-economic group dropped much more sharply than middle and low-economic groups. Māori and Pacific children are still reading at levels well below the average for Pākehā children, but Pākehā reading has slid steeply.

Early childhood education has an important influence on children's development of reading skills and love of books. What is your service and what are you doing to help?
